A-Z
Association for Learning, Disabled and
Handicapped (ALDH)
Assisting certified LD teacher (s) in tutoring students (mostly
elementary students). The teachers will instruct the volunteers on what
to do and how (helping with homework, listening to the students read,
helping with math or other reading projects). The location is
Baskerville Elementary School. Volunteers are needed twice a week
for 45 min. to 1 hour. ALDH needs volunteers through the traditional
school year (August thru May) and also during the Summer School session
from 8:30am-12:30pm for 3 weeks in July. Volunteer fundraisers are

American Red Cross

Autumn Care
Autumn Care is a skilled nursing facility located between Rocky
Mount and Nashville on Sunset Road/Eastern Ave. They need volunteers to
do activities with the residents (after school, work, or on the
weekends). You can do this as much or as little as you like. For more

Bassett Center-House the Children
This transitional home has an urgent and immediate need for childcare
providers at various times. Volunteers will play with the resident
children, do arts and crafts, or help with homework while parents are in
classes. UCM is asking that each individual, church, or
organization to sign up for at least 1 night a year. The Bassett
Center also has these opportunities available:
· Chapel Services and Bible Studies for
all ages at the availability of the volunteer.
· Kitchen help on Fridays 8:30am-10:00am
for Senior Breakfast.
· Tutoring desperately needed in ALL
subjects for school age children at the availability of the
volunteer.
· General maintenance/landscaping:
Assisting with window washing, trash disposal, sweeping, mopping,
grass cutting, raking leaves, etc.

This organization is always in need of all ages to help build, paint,
and clean at the home building sites in and around Rocky Mount.
Community Enrichment Organization
The Community Enrichment Organization is a volunteer-driven organization in Princeville, NC , that relies on participation from the entire community. This organization was founded by volunteers with a common desire to improve the overall status of children
and adults through a Family Resource center that provides several intervention programs to assist families and the community. The following volunteer opportunities are available:

Communities in Schools (CIS)
CIS needs mentors/tutors to help students in grades 9-12. Tutors are
needed for all subjects and throughout the school year. Volunteers are
encouraged to meet with the students one day a week during the school
day. If volunteers have a full-time job, CIS can work with them to get a
work release for the time spent volunteering. Scheduled volunteers and
needed approximately one hour per week. All volunteering occurs at
a s school site in the Nash-Rocky Mount School district and training is
provided by the CIS office. Ideal hours are first
thing in the morning from 8-8:45 before workday begins. Volunteers must be
at least 18 years old and there volunteer opportunities at four
middle schools (grades 7 and 8), three high schools (grades 9-12), and
the Williford Family Resource Center (pre-K through grade
5).

Crossworks
Crossworks is a non-profit organization that
fights hunger and promotes health and nutrition for families in

Downeast Partnership for Children (DEPC)
A non-profit organization dedicated to helping build a community
where every child and family can reach their full potential. DEPC
directly provides or funds more than 30 local programs in the areas of:

DEPC is in need of several volunteers to serve a seat on at least one

Gregg Court Apartments
Gregg Court Apartments an independent living facility supported by the National Church Residences offers inviting and private apartment homes for elderly or disabled adults.
Volunteers are currently needed to assist residents with light housekeeping, gardening, shopping and special events. The community Center is in need of a volunteer to act as an activities director, duties would consist of scheduling outings, craft days and special events. The residents
while independent could always use a little help with day-to-day activities. These residents would also be interested in having Bible study groups or just someone to visit with them. Volunteers with computer abilities are needed to schedule computer training with the residents who wish to learn. Whether your special talent is

Make A Wish Foundation of Eastern North
Carolina
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina exists to grant
the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions who
reside in the 49 counties East of Wake County to the Outer Banks.
Founded in 1986, the chapter recently celebrated its 1,000th
wish. The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina is currently
recruiting volunteers in the following areas:
Fundraising Volunteers: Seeking individuals who are interested
in helping with fund raising in any capacity, whether it is through the
referral of potential prospects, or actively participating in the
solicitation process.
Special Event Volunteers: Our three events each year are the Golf
Tournament, Pennies from Heaven, and Adopt-An-Angel (which takes place
in Wilmington). In addition, there are several external events
sponsored by outside vendors taking place throughout the year that need
volunteer support. Volunteers are needed to assist in the planning
of these events, in addition to helping the day of the event.
Wish Granting Volunteers: The role of the wish grantor is to make the
dreams of our wish children come true through creativity and
imagination. Wish Granters visit the family and interview the wish
child. The objective is to determine the child's wish and explain
our required paperwork to the parents/guardians. This position
requires excellent people skills, sensitivity and dependability.
Wish grantors have the privilege of seeing first-hand a child's most
cherished dream become a reality. Volunteers must complete volunteer
Orientation and Wish Granter Training.

Meals on Wheels
Volunteers are needed to help serve Senior, homebound citizens a
nutritious noonday meal. In addition, volunteers help supervise their
well-being and provide them with a human contact. This is a great
opportunity when you have a day off from school/work. It is also ideal
for a pair of community members who have their own vehicle (one to drive
and one to read directions). Volunteers arrive at Lakeside Baptist at
approx. 10:30 a.m. and are given the food and a route. The route
consists of approx. eight stops and generally takes an hour and 15
minutes of your time. *Volunteers are needed on an on-going basis.
However, there tends to be a shortage of volunteers during certain 5
week months and on the 3rd
Friday of each month.

Mediation Center of Eastern Carolina
The Mediation Center of Eastern Carolina is seeking volunteers to
serve as mediators. Volunteer mediators must complete 20 hours of
training (fee of $175.00 is reimbursed at first volunteer mediation),
and conduct mediation with co-mediator according to the standards of the
mediation network of NC (minimum of 4 per year). Volunteers must
provide their own transportation. Furthermore, volunteers must be
committed to helping people resolve disputes while having respect for

My Sisters House
MSH provides outreach and shelter services for survivors of domestic
violence and sexual assault. There are various volunteer opportunities
at MSH. They include:
· Participating in activities with the
children in the shelter, on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 7 p.m. to
9 p.m. Activities may include: crafts, coloring, or playing games.
· Monday evenings volunteers can participate
in our reading hour at the shelter from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. with children
ages 2 and up.
· Help out in the resale shop, "A
Second Season." Responsibilities include sorting, folding,
hanging, and steaming clothes. Volunteers also assist customers.
· Being "on call" which consists
of receiving domestic violence and sexual assault crisis calls and
responding with emergency services. Help in this area is needed on
Monday-Thursday evenings from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Approximately 30
hours of training is required and provided my MSH.
· Providing court accompaniment and support
to women obtaining exparte orders and protection orders, as well as
criminal action. Approximately 30 hours of training is required and
provided by MSH.

The Nash
The Nash is a county senior center that is open Monday thru Friday

They are in need of volunteers to help with the following:
· Companion Care: Volunteers are needed to
call senior citizens who live by themselves to check in on them and
make sure they are doing well. Volunteers make the phone calls from
their residence.
· Library:
Putting cards in the books and shelving the books.
· Newsletter:
Printing and sorting the newsletter for mailing purposes.
· Home Delivered Meals:
Volunteers are needed to help deliver a noonday meal to senior
citizens in the Middlesex, Bailey, and Castalia areas. Volunteers
start around 11:30 a.m. and the routes take approximately one hour to
complete. Volunteers not only provide a warm meal, but more
importantly a human contact with a smiling face.

Nash Rehabilitation and Nursing Center
of Rocky Mount has various activities scheduled each month for the
residents. Volunteers can play games, eat lunch, read, walk the
residents, etc. Bingo takes place every Saturday at 2:00pm.

Somerset Court
Somerset Court, an assisted living facility located in Rocky Mount,
needs volunteers to engage in activities with residents. Activities
include: bingo, bowling, sending note cards to residents, making crafts
or small gifts for residents, going fishing, or to ballgames. Ideally
they would like someone to come in one time a week to read from a book to
the residents, call bingo in the evening or on Saturday mornings, play
games, cook for residents, or donate fruit baskets to residents.
Volunteers are needed after school, work, or on the weekends. You can go

S.W.I.M Network Inc. (Single Women In Mission)
The S.W.I.M Network needs volunteers to aid in mentoring single women
facing various issues. Volunteers go through an eight-hour training
session (the training session is broken into two four-hour periods
generally on Saturdays). Upon completion of the training program
volunteers are needed once a week with a two-hour commitment. Volunteers
are required to submit a one-page write-up outlining the mentoring
session.

Tarboro Community Outreach
This non-profit organization is the only facility in Tarboro that focuses primarily on the needs of the homeless and/or impoverished individuals and families. Tarboro Community Outreach offers food, shelter, and counseling for the homeless. The agency also provides a food pantry and emergency
financial assistance for fuel, utilities, rent and medicine. The Blessed House focuses on the needs of single women and families with children providing food, shelter and the opportunity to move toward stable and permanent housing. The following volunteer opportunities are available:

TCO has a great need for volunteers with computer experience to surf the web in search of grants that can allow this wonderful agency to continue their good work and offer their services to so many more. This volunteer opportunity is wonderful for those who would love to volunteer, but need to
do their volunteer work from the privacy of their own home.

Food Pantry Shoppers: Volunteers will assist shoppers at the pantry to insure food is distributed fairly. Shoppers are needed Thursday and Fridays from 9:00am to 11:30am. Volunteers are welcome anytime to stock the pantry.

The Soup Kitchen: Volunteers can assist with food preparation, serving and recycling of vegetables. The soup kitchen serves 100 to 200 homeless per day and volunteers are needed from 8:00 am until serving is completed. The hours of service are 11:00am-1:00pm, Monday through Friday
and 5:00pm-6:00pm Monday through Friday.

The Shelter: Volunteers are welcome anytime for simple repairs, maintenance and painting. There is also a great need for motivational speakers, alcohol and drug abuse counseling, bible study groups, and activity groups for the homeless.

The Blessed House: Volunteers are needed to schedule outings for the children (movies, skating, bowling, etc.) Assistance is also needed in tutoring, mentoring, and on-sight activities for the children and shared children and shared activities for the families. This is a wonderful
opportunity for a group project.

Tar River Mental Health Association
Volunteers are needed to facilitate support
group meetings, help with project Santa Claus in December, go into the
schools to aid in educating youth on problems concerning mental
health. Also, needed are individuals to help with Bingo games and
issues facing the senior population. Volunteers are also needed to
set up public education booths in our community to promote awareness of
mental health issues.

United Community Ministries
Only area agency that focuses primarily on the needs of homeless and
nearly homeless families and individuals by helping them move toward
stable, permanent housing. UCM can always use volunteers to fill a
variety of roles in the Soup Kitchen and the shelters. UCM is also
recruiting volunteer tax assistors: The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
(VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free tax
help to people who cannot afford paid professional assistance.
Volunteers are trained to help prepare basic tax returns for taxpayers
with special needs, including persons with disabilities, non-English
speaking persons and elderly taxpayers. Assistance is provided at
community and neighborhood locations. Qualifications: Basic tax
knowledge (Form 1040, Form 1040A and Form 1040EZ). Basic tax training
will be provided as needed. Volunteers should also be dependable,
friendly and flexible. Length of project: February 1-April 15 and is
renewable upon agreement with volunteer.

The Wrights Center
The Wright's Center provides a supervised program of activities
designed to benefit older and/or disabled adults who, because of
physical impairments or other ailments, should not be left alone during
the day. Volunteers are needed to assist with programs such as
arts and crafts, games, recreational and social activities, and
answering the telephone. Ideal hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00
p.m. Monday thru Friday.

YMCA & Y-PALS
(Formerly Big Brothers/Big Sisters)
Local agency dedicated to improving the quality of life in the
community with programs and services that strengthen the spirit, mind
and body. Volunteers are needed in the area's) of childcare,
marketing/communications, membership services, and sports &
recreation. This agency also has a mentoring program called Y-PALS
that is in need of volunteers ages 18+ who can serve as role models and
friends for young people. These volunteers are responsible for
making a positive impact on every aspect of the child's social,
emotional, intellectual, and physical lives. This volunteer would need
to make at least a 1-year commitment, have own transportation, be
flexible and tolerable to children, and have the ability to make good
life choices. All YMCA volunteers must fill out an application,
have their references checked, consent to criminal background checks,
and complete a drug screening.
